The representative organisation of persons with disabilities in Europe
European disability Forum NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US

The EU Treaties guarantee the right for all citizens to free movement. Despite this fact, disabled people can still not fully benefit from this right as the transport system remains generally inaccessible.

The European Disability Forum believes that all people should have the right to enjoy a seamless travel experience and to benefit from an accessible, comfortable and high-quality transport system. Unfortunately, the reality across Europe is still far from this objective.

EDF is intensively lobbying the European Union towards a barrier-free Europe for all. In the field of transport, this implies:

  • respecting the design-for-all principle when designing transport vehicles and surrounding infrastructure;
  • that information about a journey is made accessible and easy to understand for everybody;
  • that information about the level of accessibility of a certain mode of transport is made available for all users;
  • providing assistance from the point of departure to the point of arrival at the final destination of a disabled passenger, tailored to his specific needs, at no extra cost.
  • disability awareness and disability equality training for all personnel working in the transport sector.
Several key legislative acts have been adopted in the transport sector in the recent past. Moreover, EDF is pushing for several proposals for legislation, which are currently under consideration by the European institutions.
