EDF CALLS ON THE EU TO PROTECT WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES FROM DISCRIMINATION
Brussels, 7 March 2014 | Despite the progress that has been made for the empowerment of women in today’s society, women still face discrimination based on their gender. Women with disabilities have to also face discrimination for their disability. On tomorrow’s occasion of the International Women’s Day 2014, EDF calls on the EU to protect women with disabilities from all forms of discrimination and to ensure gender equality.

The EU, as well as the majority of its member states, have signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that introduces the obligation of state parties to recognize that women and girls with disabilities face multiple discrimination and to take measures to ensure their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Women with disabilities are often still at risk of forced sterilization, violence or abuse and institutionalisation. They can also be deprived of fundamental rights, such as the right to be active citizens and the right to vote. In view of the upcoming EU elections, the right to vote, the inclusion and active participation of women with disabilities must be ensured.

EDF calls the EU and its Member States to mainstream the rights of women with disabilities in gender policies and to ensure the implementation of the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities , ensuring equal rights for women with disabilities and full access in all aspects of society.
