14 February 2012 /// Earlier this week, EDF joined forces with the International Disability Alliance, World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry and European Network of (ex-)Users and Survivors of Psychiatry.
Together, they submited a third-party intervention to the European Court of Human Rights against Latvia concerning unlawful deprivation of liberty of a person with psychosocial disabilities. We argued that the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, described by the European Court of Human Rights as "universal consensus on disability rights", provides the new standard whereby deprivation of persons of legal capacity and their detention in close psychiatric institutions is a flagrant violation of their human rights and freedoms.
The case is now pending at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. EDF will inform its members of all future developments.
