Update! DISCIT: New project on making persons with disabilities full citizens

EDF is happy to announce the launch of
DISCIT research project. DISCIT will last for 3 years and it aims to produce new knowledge enabling the European Union and the EU countries to achieve
full and effective participation of persons with disabilities in society and the economy.
The
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) promotes full and effective participation in society for person with disabilities; the DISCIT project investigates the social and political conditions for making such participation a reality.
On 27-28 February, the project had its
kick-off event in Brussels. Organised by
NOVA – Norwegian Social Research, the event featured academics, policymakers and advocates from 10 EU countries, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, and the US. The event included representatives from the
European Commission Directorate General for Justice,
the International Labour Organisation and
EDF.

> OBJECTIVES
DISCIT project has 3 main objectives:
- Active citizenship as a complex challenge: Develop Active Citizenship as a multifaceted concept and explore this challenge for the EU member states, European countries and the European Union;
- Arenas for active citizenship: Examine the interactions between different government levels (international, European, national, federal, regional/local) to promote active citizenship
- Effects of changing conditions for active citizenship: Investigate the settings for active citizenship in the economy, the market, community living, civic life, and in the use of new technologies; and identify policy lessons and recommendations
> EDF’S ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT
EDF is a consortium member of the DISCIT project and it will contribute to its realisation in multiple phases of the project as a
real active partner; we will review all the project processes, deliverables and outcomes to make sure that the new knowledge will express the voice of the 80 million European citizens with disabilities. EDF also expects that the policy recommendation of the project will feed the work programme of Horizon 2020, the upcoming EU policy framework for research and innovation.
