18/3: EDF PARTICIPATED AT JOINT EVENT ON MOBILISING EU CITIZENS

European Parliament elections are the periodical momentum to test both politicians’ and citizens’ engagement and capacity to debate on how best shape our societies and improve European integration for the benefit of all. In the light of the democratic crisis and growing mistrust towards the European Union, it is of utmost importance to mobilise EU citizens to go to vote in May, said panellists from AGE, COFACE, ILGA Europe, EWL, ENAR, EDF, EAPN, AEGEE and Eurochild during a joint event on 18 March at the European Parliament hosted by Claude Moraes MEP.

EDF SUPPORTS THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT'S DRAFT WRITTEN DECLARATION ON THE ESTABLISMENT OF A EUROPEAN COMMISSION DICTORATE FOR DISABILITY

Several Members of the European Parliament have recently launched a campaign to reinforce the European Commission services responsible for disability affairs. Currently, the Commission administrative set-up in the field of disability policy includes only a small, under-resourced unit. Following the EU conclusion of the UN CRPD, there is a clear need to strengthen the unit and transform it into a fully-fledge Directorate in charge of the UN CRPD and of disability affairs, which can have the necessary power and capacity to mainstream the Convention, coordinate with (and influence) all other Commission services and effectively act as a UN CRPD focal point.

The Commission needs to recognize the change brought by the conclusion of the UN CRPD by upgrading its current unit!

Therefore , EDF supports the European Parliament's written declaration on the establishment of a European Commission directorate for disability (WD 7/14) and urges all MEPs to sign it.
