EDF’s International Cooperation Project

EDF is leading a project, titled “Promoting disability inclusive international cooperation: Ensuring that EU policies and funding contribute to the strengthening of the disability movement and the promotion of the CRPD worldwide”.

Duration

The project started on the 1st of August 2019 and will end on the 31st of July 2021.

Budget

The overall budget is $400,000.00.

Objectives

This new project  will reinforce and expand EDF’s advocacy platform to influence the European Union (EU)’s approach to Article 32 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): International Cooperation.

The results will be twofold:

  1. Strengthen the integration of accessibility and inclusion in EU development policies and funding programmes and ;
  2. More systematic involvement of DPOs in the EU’s work in its overseas delegations, where programmes are implemented.

EDF will also build the capacity of national and regional organisations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) to advocate for their inclusion in international cooperation legislation, programmes and budget article 4.3 of the CRPD: Participation of Persons with Disabilities.

This project, in synergy with other EDF initiatives focusing on international cooperation, will strongly contribute to the capacity building of the disability movement and to the realisation of articles 32 and 4.3 of the CRPD.

Drawing on the experience of our members and partners and in line with EDF’s international cooperation strategy, it will also contribute to raising awareness globally about DPOs’ engagement in international cooperation, not just as beneficiaries but also as active agents of change and advocates for their own rights.

Outcomes of project

The three main outcomes of the project are the following:

  1. The EU’s development policies, programmes, and budgets are increasingly disability inclusive
  2. Capacity of EDF members and partner regional DPOs is strengthened to engage in policy and programme dialogue with the EU on international cooperation
  3. National and regional DPOs are engaged in international cooperation dialogue and decision making with the EU, its Member States, and in the EU’s overseas delegations

Geographical location

The project will have a main focus at the EU level, primarily Brussels but also selected EU delegations overseas. There will be three countries in which workshops will be conducted, to be decided in consultation with regional DPOs.

Target groups

The project will focus on the following groups:

  • EU and in particular the departments and institutions (DG DEVCO, DG EMPL and the European Union External Action Service [EEAS]);
  • EU Members States’ development agency
  • EDF members as well as national and regional DPOs
