EDF representatives met with Commissioner-Designate for Equality, Helena Dalli on September 20. Our delegation stressed the importance to achieve equal rights for persons with disabilities, who make up at least 15% of the population, and briefed the Commissioner-Designate on priorities of the disability movement, including:

  • Adopting a strong European Disability Rights Agenda 2020-2030, that makes the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities a reality in Europe and the world;
  • Gender equality policies and the fight to eliminate violence against women and girls should include women with disabilities;
  • Adopting equal treatment legislation that will protect persons with disabilities from discrimination  in all areas of life, including multiple and intersectional forms of discrimination;.
  • Ensure that the Commission’s focal point on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has the necessary resources and a central position in the Commission’s services dedicated to fundamental rights.

Yannis Vardakastanis, President of the European Disability Forum stated

We need to see concrete advances on our rights in the next 5 years: this means an end to segregation and discriminatory policies, concrete actions to counter poverty and social exclusion of persons with disabilities and more funding to ensure equality for persons with disabilities. Commissioner-designate Dalli has an excellent track record in fighting against discrimination, and we look forward to working with her.

Nadia Hadad, Executive Committee Member of the European Disability Forum added:

The Commissioner-designate showed a big openness to work on transversal issues that include disability, including combating intersectional discrimination in all.

Commissioner-Designate Helena Dalli stated:

I thank the European Disability Forum for this opportunity to have a first exchange in terms of the priorities for persons with disabilities for the next five years. I have always worked closely with civil society organisations at the national level and intend to do so at the European level if confirmed as Commissioner. My message at this stage is very simple: 'nothing about you without you.
