You will find below EDF's position on a number of key topics, which were discussed and approved altogether during the EDF Board on March 3-4 2018.

  1. Women's Rights - CEDAW committee elections: EDF fully endorses the candidature of EDF Vice-President and Spanish Candidate to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Ana Peláez Narváez. It is time for the CEDAW committee to also include women with disabilities! Support Ana using the hashtag #disabilityforCEDAW . Click here for more information

  2. European Disability Strategy: Building on the achievements of the current European Disability Strategy 2010-2020, a follow up Strategy 2020-2030 is required to ensure the continued and harmonized implementation of the UN Convention both by the EU and by the Member States. The Strategy should become the driving force of a new Disability Rights Agenda 2020-2030!

  3. 2021: This year should be declared the next European Year of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We want the EU to drive forward the CRPD agenda, making 2021 a year of awareness, a year to celebrate diversity and inclusion!

  4. EU budget: The European Disability movement asks for the futureEU budget to invest in people to reduce inequalities and poverty. The European Funds, today and in the future, must be spent in partnership with organisations of persons with disabilities and in the full respect of people’s fundamental rights.

  5. European Accessibility Act: EDF Board members regret that the Council position on the Act is far from being truly meaningful to people’s everyday lives, and pressure from DPOs will therefore increase at national level in the coming months of negotiations among the EU institutions.

  6. European Pillar of Social Rights: The EU and its political leaders must leave up to their commitments and should put the European Pillar of Social Rights in practice with strong legislation and adequate funding. EDF members call for access to employment of persons with disability, a strong work life balance directive. EDF board recalled the EDF resolution on the Pillar and called for adequate universal social protection to lift people out of poverty and go behind the field of employment.

  7. Sustainable Development Goals: EDF thanks Mr Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission for supporting the launch of EDF second human rights report: “The 2030 Agenda and the SDGs: A European perspective to respect, protect and fulfil the CRPD”. The SDGs in Europe can no longer leave persons with disabilities behind! Check out our SDGs resolution adopted by EDF board members to urge European leaders to act (available on Friday 09th March 2018). Click here to view Timmerman's video.

  8. CRPD elections: At the next Conference of States Parties in June 2018, States Parties to the CRPD will elect 8 new members to the CRPD Committee. Very experienced European members are leaving the committee at the end of this year, and there is also a severe gender imbalance in the committee, with only 1 out of 18 members a women. EDF calls on EU member states to nominate strong European candidates, specially qualified women. Here is the procedure to follow

  9. Oviedo Convention: EDF calls on EU member states to not support the Council of Europe’s Additional Protocol to the Oviedo Convention addressing the “human rights and dignity of persons with mental disorders”. The draft Additional Protocol is not compatible with the CRPD as it allows for forced treatment and placement of persons with disabilities.

  10. European Disability Card: The European disability movement calls for a more ambitious implementation of the European Disability Card. A card which is recognised across the European Union and gives persons with disabilities access to a meaningful range of support and services.
