Meeting of the Disability Intergroup: MEPs and DPOs reactions to the EP CRPD report

Strasbourg,
7 July 2016

On 7th July, the Disability Intergroup met for the last time before summer at the European Parliament of Strasbourg. The meeting took place just after the debate and adoption in plenary of the resolution on the ‘Implementation of the UN CRPD with special regard to the Concluding Observations of the UN CPRD Committee’. With this resolution, the European Parliament is the first European Institution to react to the Concluding Observations. The Intergroup addressed both the CRPD Concluding Observations and the European Accessibility Act. The Act is one of the three urgent recommendations formulated by the CRPD Committee, and the intergroup follows the start of the legislative process with great interest.

The meeting, chaired by Helga Stevens, Rapporteur of the EP Report, started with a few words by Catherine Naughton, Director of EDF. Then four EDF members took the floor to raise their voice and share their understanding of the UN CRPD and of the Concluding Observations. Among them, European Union of the Deaf, European Network on Independent Living, Mental Health Europe and International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, made the trip to Strasbourg especially for the occasion. IF was represented at the meeting by a member of IF Youth Committee, Dominik Drdul, who is a great activist of the Slovak and European disability movement.

The involvement of persons with disabilities and their representative organisations in decisions that affect their lives is at the core of the UN CRPD. It was crucial for DPOs to be able to tell which points are satisfying, and where there is a room for improvement. At the end of the meeting, Shadow rapporteurs for the EP CRPD Report and rapporteurs for opinion gave their impression on the their progressive work inside the EP, and the efforts that still remain to make for the protection of disabled people’s rights.

The audio recording of the meeting is available at this link.

A press conference dedicated to the Stevens report, with the participation of MEPs Stevens, Howitt, Kosa and EDF, took place on the day before. You can watch it in replay at this link.
