Sustainable development must be inclusive of persons with disabilities!

SDGs Conference Poster

Over 100 people participated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) conference organised by the European Disability Forum and the Belgian Disability Forum. The conference took place on the 3rd March in Brussels, with representatives of organisations of persons with disabilities and a range of partners and allies from across Europe.

The objective of the conference was to show how the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) should serve as a guiding framework for the implementation and the monitoring of the SDGs. Participants were also invited to hear more about the Voluntary National Review processes, using Belgium as an example. It was the occasion to launch EDF second human rights report entitled: “2030 Agenda and SDGs report: A European perspective to respect, protect and fulfil the CRPD”.

The discussion took place two months after the first meeting of the **EU Multi-Stakeholder Platform for the SDGs, where no organisations of persons with disabilities are represented. **

The conference was the opportunity to hear more about the SDGs in Europe, with the contribution of Mr Johannes Trimmel, President of CONCORD, who presented the European Union Multi-Stakeholder Platform on the SDGs. Chairman of the Danish Disabled Persons Organisation (DPOD), Mr Thorkild Olesen, talked about the experience of Denmark going through the Voluntary National Review process last year. We also heard, as a case study, the VNR process for Belgium with the interventions of Ms Florence Pottiez, attached to the cabinet of the Prime Minister, Ms Anne-Sophie Dubrux, from the Conseil de la Jeunesse at the Federal Council for Sustainable Development and Mr Pierre Gyselinck from the Belgian Disability Forum. Finally, Ms Ana Peláez Narváez, EDF Vice-President, Ms Tove Søvndahl Gant from European External Action Service and Ms Cécile Grosjean from DG DEVCO took part in the panel discussion to launch EDF new report on the SDGs.

In a video message, the Chairperson of the European Union (EU) Multi-Stakeholder Platform on the SDGs and First Vice-President of European Commission, Frans Timmermans, congratulated EDF for the "excellent contribution of this report to the work of the European Commission, helping to turn the promises in New York into realities on the ground, and paving the way for a stronger and more inclusive society."

The board members of EDF agreed to adopt a resolution where they call on the EU to fully include persons with disabilities in all policy dialogues regarding the SDGs, in Europe and in the context of international cooperation.
