UN Conference of State Parties: EDF will report from New York

On 9-11 June, the heart of the disability movement worldwide will be beating in New York, where the 8th session of the Conference of State Parties (COSP) to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will take place. The theme of this year’s conference is: " Mainstreaming the rights of persons with disabilities in the post-2015 development agenda". The conference will include a series of interesting meetings and events, including a side event organised by the European Commission and EDF. EDF and its members will be in New York to contribute to this important international dialogue on the rights of persons with disabilities.

OUR SIDE EVENT

During the Conference of State Parties, the European Commission and EDF will co-organise a side event entitled: “Disability Inclusive Disaster Preparedness and Response: Sendai and Beyond”. This side event aims to provide an overview of the cooperation between the EU and its member states in inclusive disaster risk reduction, taking a policy perspective. Examples will be given of practical tools and field interventions. The role of persons with disabilities at all levels, in policy, and in implementation, will be highlighted.

The side event will be chaired by EDF President, Yannis Vardakastanis, and will take place on 9 June at 13.15-14.30 (New York time) at the UN Headquarters, conference room 12.

BACKGROUND

According to article 40 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD), the States Parties shall meet regularly in a Conference of States Parties in order to consider any matter with regard to the implementation of the present Convention. Since 2008, seven sessions of the Conference of States Parties have been held at UN Headquarters in New York.
