  • Comments of Iceland MPs are unacceptable sexism and ableism.

11.12.2018 They need to resign immediately. Six Members of the Icelandic Parliament were overheard making sexist and ableist comments about a number of prominent women in a bar. This is inexcusable hate speech and we call for their immediate resignation. We, the European Disability Forum (EDF), the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) and the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) are outraged by the comments made by the Iceland MPs. At one point former MP and ENIL member Freyja Haraldsdóttir, a prominent woman’s rights and disability campaigner, was compared to a seal by the MPs. These comments are...

07.12.2018 Today, SDG Watch Europe publish an open letter to several EU leaders where it expresses "its serious concern that three years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs, the EU and its Member States still show very little sense of urgency or ambition about the actual implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the transition to sustainability." The European Disability Forum endorsed the letter, along with several other organisations. Disability-inclusive Sustainable Development Goals are essential for an Europe of Social Rights. • #AgeingEqual – 90% of all blind and partially sighted Europeans are over the age of 60

06.12.2018 Nearly 90% of all blind and partially sighted Europeans are over the age of 60. This is why the European Union of the Blind provides a resource section on older persons in their website. It includes practical information and policy papers and a description of projects in which they are involved. One such project is VISAL -  Visual Impaired Seniors Active Learning. VISAL consists in a training course which was implemented in 13 EU Countries. It targets older persons with sight loss and aims to help them gain confidence, skills and awareness to the best of their individual abilities. It trained...

  • #AgeingEqual – Testimonials from AlzheimerEurope

05.12.2018 Today, we feature 3 testimonials from Alzheimer Europe’s European Working Group of People with Dementia: Tomaž, Helen and Carol   Statement from Tomaž, member of European Working Group of People with Dementia and Alenka his supporter, from Slovenia   I think the major problem is people still underestimating the abilities and skills of elderly people. As a matter of fact, we need more time to think or finish specific tasks, but we are still able to do things properly and with quality. Ageism is a kind of social construct. When I was young, it was normal for young people to have a deep respect...

  • Inexcusable hate speech from Iceland MPs

04.12.2018 We were extremely shocked and outraged to learn about the horrible comments made by Icelandic MPs against its female colleagues and against disability activist and ex-MP Freyja Haraldsdottir. The MPs involved should realise how unacceptable their behaviour is and resign. Hate speech like this is inexcusable. The half apologies given are inexcusable. Politicians are supposed to be role-models. They were exactly the opposite. This story also highlights a common occurrence: women with disabilities are at a special risk of being on the receiving end of hate speech, discrimination and violence....
