15th Conference of State Parties to the UN CRPD

The 15th session of the Conference of State Parties to the UN CRPD (COSP15) will take place from 14-16 June 2022. The overarching theme: Building disability-inclusive and participatory societies in the COVID context and beyond.

What is the Conference of State Parties

The Conference of State Parties is an annual event organised by the United Nations. During the Conference, participants discuss the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Participants include representatives of the State Parties (countries and regional organisations that ratified the Convention), civil society organisations (such as organisations of persons with disabilities) and disability rights experts (such as the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities and academics).

This year's conference: COSP 15

The 15th session of the Conference of State Parties to the UN CRPD (COSP15) will take place from 14-16 June 2022. The overarching theme: Building disability-inclusive and participatory societies in the COVID context and beyond.

Three subthemes:

  • Sub theme 1: Innovation and technology advancing disability rights
  • Sub theme 2: Economic empowerment and entrepreneurship of persons with disabilities
  • Sub theme 3: Participation of persons with disabilities in climate action, disaster risk reduction and resilience against natural disasters

The COSP15 will be held in in-person, with its opening meetings in the General Assembly Hall and meetings on 15 and 16 of June will be in Conference Room 4. Side events will be organised online.

Civil Society Forum

The Civil Society Coordination Mechanism, facilitated by the International Disability Alliance (IDA) will host a Civil Society Forum on Monday 13 June 2022. Please read the concept note for more information.

Registration for NGOs with ECOSOC status and NGOs Accredited to the Conference of State Parties is NOW open. The deadline is 31 May 2022.

General Debate

The General Debate will begin on the first day of the conference, 14th June. Inscription to speakers list will be open from 23 May at 10am, and close on 6 June at 6pm (New York time). The speaking limit for each statement will be 3 minutes which will be strictly enforced with the speaker’s microphone be cut off automatically. Individual reasonable accommodation will be granted for persons with disabilities and needs must be clearly indicated in the inscription and communicated in advance. A Guidance Note will be posted online in the UN prior to the opening of the inscription process.

Pre-recorded video statements will be accepted as a means to deliver a statement by a duly inscribed speaker in the General Debate. The video needs to be limited to the given time frame (3 minutes) and be submitted directly to secretariat. Details will be announced in the UN Journal in late April/early May 2022. Elections for the CRPD Committee

Elections for the CRPD committee members will be organized on 14 June. The term of 9 elected members will expire on 31 December 2022. Nine seats in the Committee must now be filled through an election. More information can be read on the UN webpage.

Roundtable Interventions

We are pleased to share with you the opportunity to nominate speakers for making 2-minute Roundtable Interventions and a (Potential) Youth Opening Session speaker can be found at the link here. It is not yet confirmed that there will be a youth speaker, but we are gathering nominations in the hope and expectation that there will be one this year. A screen reader version is also attached. Nominations are due by 2pm ET on Friday, 15 April.  The Civil Society Coordination Mechanism (CSCM) will then vote on the nominees, and submit civil society’s selections to the Bureau. Individuals will be notified in advance by the UN about how to proceed to make an intervention.
