Spain amends its constitution to promote disability rights

Great news from Spain: Last week, the Spanish of Constitution was amended to align it with the rights of persons with disabilities. The amendment to article 49 of the Spanish Constitution to align it with the rights of persons with disabilities is a result of a long campaign by CERMI.  Article 49 still used medical approach, mentioning “handicapped” instead of persons with disabilities. In addition, the proposed change will specifically mention women and children with disabilities.

We congratulate CERMI and the entire disability movement on this significant achievement.

Yannis Vardakastanis, President of the European Disability Forum, stated:

We congratulate Spain, and especially the Spanish disability movement, on this historic constitutional reform. It corrects the misguided belief that persons with disabilities are “less than” and brings us a step closer to ensuring our human rights.
