WAI-CooP online meeting on the web directive’s feedback and enforcement mechanism

As part of the Web Accessibility Initiative Communities of Practice (WAI-CooP) project, we organised an online open meeting on 7 March 2023, focusing on the feedback and enforcement mechanisms of the web directive.

In her introduction June Lowery-Kingston, Head of Unit at the European Commission, outlined some of the key learning points from the recent review of the web directive and highlighted the importance of accessibility statements for the directive’s feedback and enforcement mechanisms.

The first panel focused on the feedback mechanism. Panelists reflected on issues affecting its effectiveness and what could be done to encourage public sector bodies to better promote the feedback mechanism to users. They also made suggestions on what to do to improve the mechanism so that it is truly effective for users.

The second panel focused on the enforcement mechanism. Panelists discussed key issues impacting the effectiveness of the enforcement procedure and how these could be addressed. They reflected on the challenges of enforcing the directive without access to technical expertise and also made suggestions on how to improve enforcement in the future.

The event was wrapped up with key takeaways and conclusions from June Lowery-Kingston from the European Commission and Kevin White from W3C.
