On
the 2nd of December, the
Spanish Committee of Representatives of
Persons with Disabilities (CERMI), member of the
European Disability Forum
(EDF), has asked a
State Pact among political parties in order to ensure that
there is
no regression of the rights of persons with disabilities and in order
to guarantee
inclusion, independent living and
self-determination of persons with
disabilities. This action takes place in the framework of the new strategy of
CERMI to protect the rights or persons with disabilities in this period of
austerity measures.
The demonstration has gathered more than 50.000 persons with disabilities coming from all over Spain.
Yannis Vardakastanis , president of EDF and chair of the International Disability Alliance (IDA), brought the solidarity of the European and international disability movement to this demonstration, reminding the participants that they are not alone in this important battle for their rights.
“T
here are other solutions to get out of this crisis and we need to
demand from our governments and from the European Union that they find
solutions which do not harm us.What started as a financial and economic
crisis is becoming a human rights crisis because of the way our governments are
responding to it", stated Yannis
Vardakastanis.
