Outcomes of EDF Board meeting

Feb 29th and March 1st

The board meeting was preceded by a reception and a conference on international cooperation.

We welcomed a new member: EURORDIS, an alliance of patient organisations representing 894 rare disease patient organisations in 72 countries.

  1. We launched our toolkit for DPOs on working with Refugees with Disabilities
  2. The Board adopted EDF’s Social Media Policy.
  3. The Board decided the theme of our 6th human rights report (due 2021): access to justice Our next Human Rights Report will be on political participation (5th edition, scheduled for 2020.
  4. The Board agreed on a public statement calling on the EU and EU countries to nominate candidates for the upcoming elections of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  5. The Board agreed that the campaign for the next Disability Rights Agenda will include and support campaigns for national disability strategies.
  6. We agreed to work on policies regarding sustainability and the climate emergency, especially the EU Green Deal. Priorities include accessibility of energy-efficient buildings, accessible public transport, inclusive employment, energy availability and energy prices. We will look at the risks and negative impact that might come from the lack of involvement of persons with disabilities in environment and sustainability policies.
  7. We updated our members on our advocacy towards the Council of Europe, especially our work opposing the draft additional protocol to the Oviedo Convention on involuntary placement and involuntary treatment. Due to our advocacy together with key partners, the Council is now running a study in good practices in mental healthcare..
  8. Our Youth Committee and Women’s Committee reported on their achievements for 2019 (Women’s Committee achievements; Youth Committee’s achievements) and planned activities for 2020.
  9. The Board reviewed the 2019 external evaluation, and agreed the next steps to address the recommendations.

We also updated the participants on our work with EU Institutions, including:

  • The re-establishment of the Disability Intergroup, with EDF as its secretariat. The Intergroup also elected its Bureau. We supported the creation of its workplan for 2020-2021.
  • Discussions for a 5th European Parliament of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Past meetings with several EU Commissioners to discuss the priorities of the disability movement and advocate for a stronger Disability Rights Agenda 2020-2030. This includes EU Commissioner for Equality, Commissioner for Crisis Management and the cabinets of the First Vice-President, Vice-President of Values and Transparency. It also included the cabinet of the President of the EU Council.
  • Future meetings with the President of the European Parliament, the Commissioner for Transport and the Commissioner for International Partnerships
