Parliament and Council co-sign the Work-Life Balance Directive

20 June 2019

On 13 June the Council of the EU’s Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) adopted the Directive on work-life balance. On the 20th of June, the European Parliament and the Council are co-signing the Directive. It is expected that the Directive will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in the next 3-5 weeks. The Directive will enter into force 21 days after its publication in the Official Journal.

Pushing for effective transposition

NGOs are now focusing on ensuring a strong implementation of the Directive in the Member States. EDF has joined a coalition of European networks of NGOs to urge national governments to swiftly and effectively transpose the new Work-Life Balance Directive.

In a joint letter to EPSCO, the coalition urge national governments to move towards swift transposition after the 13th June meeting of the EPSCO Council.

The coalition calls for transposition of the Directive at national level that upholds the principles of adequate payment of family leaves, boosting investment in services to families as a complementary measure, recognising the diversity of families and their needs, promoting the use of EU funding programmes to support innovation and upward reforms, recognising the important role of civil dialogue and social dialogue, bringing family policies in line with new labour market realities, and ensuring adequate monitoring and reporting.
