A sustainable economy must be disability-inclusive: meeting European Commissioner Roswall

A delegation of the European Disability Forum met with European Commissioner Jessika Roswall, the Commissioner in charge of Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, on 25 April. The delegation was led by Nadia Hadad, our Executive Committee member.

We discussed the importance of a sustainable Europe for persons with disabilities and how we should be fully included in the efforts. The delegation focused on:

  • The need for the New European Bauhaus initiative to include funding for accessible and sustainable construction and renovation.
  • Efforts to ensure persons with disabilities are included in the development of the circular economy. This includes employment in green sectors, accessible and inclusive recycling and reuse facilities, and addressing the socio-economic impacts of the green economy.
  • Guaranteeing that the ‘single market for sustainable products’ provides environment-conscious options that are affordable and accessible to persons with disabilities.

Nadia Hadad, our Executive Committee Member, stated:

We, persons with disabilities, are among the most impacted by the consequences of overexploitation of our environment – it’s time we are part of the solution. We should work together to come up with disability-inclusive solutions that protect our environment and economy.
