Bicycles and Independent Living

Bicycles and Independent Living

The programme, through the National Assembly of Persons with Disabilities (NAPD), has provided a number of bicycles to social workers in the geographic regions where we work. This might seem an unusual choice to those in urban areas but social workers in Ukraine serve various villages and dozens of families in their service area. They need to transport hygiene, food and medicines, and sometimes across very far distances. The provision of bicycles has been very popular and the need remains unfilled.

Social workers play a key role in supporting persons with disabilities to live independently and stay out of institutional care, free to exert their own wishes and preferences but having access to the services they need. Providing these people with bicycles has played a key role in making their job more enjoyable, and more impactful and is absolutely aligned with the human values of dignity, equality, liberty, and integrity as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“The exhibition introduces us to the stories of its heroes: how they made their step to come out into the light. And the information campaign as a whole has become a powerful incentive for people with disabilities to express themselves and become visible,” said Svitlana Demchuk, regional coordinator of the League of the Strong public union.

The heroes of the campaign are 10 people with disabilities from three regions of Ukraine – Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Cherkasy. Personal photo shoots were organized for them. The photographer based the composition of the photos on the play of light and shadows. The main idea of the exhibition is to motivate people with disabilities and their relatives to accept themselves, overcome internal barriers and speak up for their needs and rights. Video stories are also available on the League of the Strong YouTube channel.

The exhibition is held in partnership with Ukrzaliznytsia and has travelled across the country being exhibited at railway stations and public spaces.
