The European Commission is going forward with its plan to dismantle established rules that were meant to protect social, human, and labour rights, as well as digital rights, and the environment.
We joined 470 other organisations in an open statement with a clear message: this is unacceptable. The statement, launched ahead of the ‘State of the European Union‘ speech on 10 September, protests against this dismantling of protection and cutting of important rules that would ensure companies follow standards to protect the environment, as well as social and human rights.
We are concerned that this Commission’s stated mission of ‘removing red tape’ will benefit industry at the expense of the consumers and people of Europe, who have fought hard for those rules to be established.
One example is the Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting Directive and the Due Diligence Directive, on which EDF campaigned and achieved important progress for the rights of persons with disabilities – this is now under threat.
