European Economic and Social Committee advocates for better social integration

Our board member, Dovilé Juodkaité, participated in a European Economic and Social Committee plenary debate on promoting the social integration of persons with disabilities, which was held on 18 September. Ádám Kósa, State Secretary for Disability Policy at Hungary’s Ministry of the Interior, also spoke at the debate.

Dovilé Juodkaité emphasised key factors for improving the inclusion of persons with disabilities. She pointed out that barriers in employment, education, and social services not only perpetuate segregation but also hinder persons from living the lives they want and fully participating in society.

The plenary then adopted the opinion SOC/807 on the Social integration of persons with disabilities and persons with changed working capacity. This opinion presents recommendations on ways to help persons with disabilities enter the open labour market and better implement the aims highlighted in the Disability Employment Package. It focuses on two topics:

  • the social integration, complex rehabilitation and occupational rehabilitation of persons with disabilities and changed working capacity; and
  • an EU-level reflection around the need for reasonable accommodation.
