17 June 8.30- 9:45 AM (New York time)/14h30-15h45 (Brussels time)
Organised by: European Union, with co-sponsors Austria and the European Disability Forum.
This side event will provide an exchange of views on the development of disability strategies as tools for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It will also represent a useful forum to discuss how to implement Article 32 of the UNCRPD on International Cooperation.
Mr. Gerard Quinn, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, will chair the event. The European Union will present its recently adopted Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030, which includes a broad chapter on external dimension and international cooperation. The European Disability Forum will introduce its contribution to the development of the EU Strategy. The UN will give an insight into the progress made on the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy. Finally, two States Parties will give presentations regarding their own national strategies: Austria will present its National Action Plan on Disability and Papua New Guinea will provide an overview relative to its National Policy on Disability.
The event will constitute a great occasion to share knowledge and good practices, discussing different approaches and finding possible implementation synergies.
