Don't compromise the right of persons with disabilities' right to train travel

Dear colleague MEP Mr Boguslaw Liberadzki,

We are writing to you in your quality as rapporteur of the revision of the EU Rail Passenger Rights’ Regulation.

As members of the European Parliament’s Disability Intergroup, we call on you not to compromise the European Parliament’s position regarding pre-notification for assistance for persons with reduced mobility (amendment 101, Article 24 (1) a).

The Council’s proposal for this provision was seen as extremely negative by several disability rights organisations and represents a step backwards for the rights of persons with disabilities.

It is essential that European Parliament’s proposal prevails in this regard. While not ideal, it is a step forward in our commitment to fully implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and in ensuring the free movement of 100 million persons with disabilities living in Europe.

We call on you, as rapporteur, to make clear that this provision is not up for negotiation. By having a strong stand in this regard we will show the positive impact that the EU can have on the everyday lives of persons with disabilities across the EU.
