Statement: We demand strong action to reduce poverty of persons with disabilities in EU

Situation has gotten worse in many countries since 2010

Mathieu was deported from the UK to France because he was a “undue burden”. Luminita didn’t receive an education and was withheld wages. Victoria was fired because of her disability.

More than 1 in 4 (28.7%) persons with disabilities live in poverty today. In 11 countries more persons with disabilities live in poverty today than 10 years ago. This is why today, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we launched a statement calling on the EU and EU countries to take strong action to reduce poverty. We specifically call on countries to fix disability assessment processes, improve disability benefits and invest in accessibility, support structures and support services.

The EU and all EU countries ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We demand them to honour their commitments and ensure persons with disabilities live with dignity in the community.

Yannis Vardakastanis, President of the European Disability Forum said:

“EU countries are failing their citizens with disabilities. They need to act now to ensure that we can live our lives with dignity, to ensure we are not left behind.”
