Put education at the heart of the African Union and the European Union partnership

The European Disability Forum (EDF) has signed an open letter with several civil society organisations calling on African Union and European Union leaders to make education a key part of their renewed partnership.

The letter urges both Unions to prioritise inclusive, equitable, and quality education at all levels — from early childhood to higher education. It calls for a lifelong learning approach that goes beyond a narrow focus on skills and employability.

EDF highlights the need to make education systems fully inclusive and accessible for learners with disabilities, ensuring that no one is left behind in AU–EU cooperation on education and development.

The letter outlines concrete recommendations to make education systems more resilient, just, and accessible for all. Below are the key messages we support:

  • Align EU investments with AU education priorities and lifelong learning.
  • Advance inclusive education with a focus on gender and disability rights.
  • Protect education in emergencies and integrate climate literacy.
  • Uphold the 20% national budget benchmark and address debt distress.
  • Safeguard EU aid for education and strengthen public systems.
  • Support teachers through joint AU–EU initiatives and better data systems.
  • Ensure civil society, learners, and marginalised groups have a voice.
