COP27: Will Climate Action plans be disability-inclusive?

COP27: Will Climate Action plans be disability-inclusive?

The Climate Crisis affects us all. But more so persons with disabilities. Forced displacement, lack of disability-inclusive procedures in case of climate disasters (floods, wildfires, extreme heat and cold, loss of electricity), disproportionate impact on poor people… issues caused by this global emergency always leave persons with disabilities worse off.

These are some of the many reasons that persons with disabilities should be involved – and lead – climate action, especially at a political level.

European Disability Forum at the COP27

EDF Executive Committee members Nadia Hadad and Pat Clarke will represent us at the COP27 (the flagship Climate Change Conference organised by the UN). There they will advocate for policymakers and activists to enact action on climate change that does not leave persons with disabilities behind. During the event, which will run from 6 to 18 November, our representatives will demand that:

  • Persons with disabilities, through their representative organisations, are meaningfully involved in all decision-making about climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • All climate policies are inclusive and accessible, advancing the human rights of persons with disabilities.
  • No policy measures proposed or adopted should in any way infringe on the rights of persons with disabilities or reinforce discrimination.

Nadia Hadad will also speak at the side event “From Exclusion to Leadership: People with Disabilities Develop an Agenda for Inclusive Climate Action” on 10 November at 17:30 CET.
