Winners of EDF Photo Competition 'Breaking Barriers - Stories and voices of women and girls with disabilities’

Women and girls, particularly those with disabilities, are consistently left behind in various aspects of life. This is why the EDF Photo Competition 2023 ‘Breaking Barriers – Stories and voices of women and girls with disabilities’ aimed to challenge participants to present images that break down stereotypes and preconceptions surrounding women with disabilities from diverse cultural, background, and/or ethnic contexts. 

The jury – composed by EDF board members, photographers and members of the staff – judged the entries based on the following criteria:  

  • Quality of the picture  
  • Innovation  
  • Creativity  
  • Relevance to the theme  

EDF would like to congratulate the winners and thank all the participants who have sent us their photographs. 

The winners

1st place – Sabina Giardino (Italy)

Her limbs have been amputated.This photo is a portrait of Viviana at a Iyengar Yoga class 2 years after her limbs were removed due to a medical mistake. Taken this year in April. She is the image of resistence, resilience, and courage.

2nd place – Emily Ameto (Italy) 

Black and white photo of a mother and daughter. The daughter tenderly pushes her mother's wheelchair.
It’s in the little things that you need to show how “big” you really are.

3rd place – Javier Arcenillas (Spain) 

A wheelchair-using woman works in her office at the town hall. As she picks up the phone she juggles to keep her papers in order.
This is Marian, one of the administration officers at the Alcobendas City Council in Madrid. She has been fighting for years to make her work area an optimal space without barriers.
